Is Donald Trump unbeatable? No. And today’s deranged, divisive, and completely scattershot 1 hour and 32 minute speech at the Republican National Convention tonight should tell you why.
His speech was longer than the average movie. He rambled from topic to topic, changing subject at almost a breakneck speed. He played rhetorical footsie with right-wing autocrats like Viktor Orban, Kim Jong-Un, and Vladimir Putin. Then, he lied at just about a record pace, even beating out his lie-filled performance at the debate.
The same man who promised “unity” has doubled down on division. He is as close to incapable of change as a man could possibly be. He has continued to spread bogus claims of a “rigged election,” and he has promised to somehow “prevent it.” He has continued his attacks against Nancy Pelosi and President Biden. More importantly, he has done so knowing the highly charged political environment we are in.
(I should also mention that Trump’s assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, had details on his phone about both Trump and President Biden, and may have been probing for more info about the DNC).
With tonight’s speech, that “unity” fiction behind the Republican Party has been shown for the sham it is. I encourage every person in America—Democratic, Republican, and independent—to watch that long, painful speech. When you do, tell me if you think that 2024 Donald Trump should be anywhere near the White House.
It is that simple. We were right to be skeptical about a “reformed and repentant Trump.” He did not have his “St. Paul at Damascus” moment. He had his Donald Trump moment. It’s who he is. It’s why he doubled down on dangerous MAGA policies and rhetoric. It’s why he picked the MAGA firebrand J.D. Vance to be his MAGA successor shortly after his brush with death. Why did we expect any better from a man who cheered on the almost-hanging of his own loyal Vice President?
Now the choice is up to America. What do you want for the next 4 years? Do you want normalcy, or military tribunals? Normalcy, or what Donald Trump himself vowed would be a “bloodbath?” Normalcy, or Proud Boys patrolling the grounds?
It is up to you, and it is up to me. And God help us if we make the wrong choice.
